Anti-Poaching Manager Tanzania
Summary:
Lead and oversee all anti-poaching operations within a 2,500 sq km area. This field-based role demands a hands-on, humble leader with strong operational experience and a commitment to on-the-ground involvement. Manage a team of up to 80 Anti-Poaching Rangers (APRs), maintaining agility, mental sharpness, and peak physical fitness.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operational Leadership: Plan, lead, and oversee patrols, surveillance, anti-illegal grazing operations, and rapid responses. Maintain strict adherence to safety protocols and ensure operational readiness.
- Team Management: Recruit, mentor, train, and evaluate ranger teams, prioritizing performance, welfare, and readiness.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Cultivate strong relationships with law enforcement, conservation authorities, and local communities. Lead joint operations and facilitate effective intelligence sharing.
- Intelligence & Technology: Manage informant networks, deploy surveillance technologies (drones, thermal/night vision, camera traps), and operate tracking/reporting systems (EarthRanger, SMART Patrol, CyberTracker). Oversee resource allocation and maintain equipment (weapons, surveillance tools, camera traps, communication systems).
- Training & Compliance: Deliver specialized training in tracking, firearms safety, wildlife crime investigation, and first aid. Ensure full compliance with all relevant laws and safety standards.
- Reporting & Administration: Provide regular operational reports, incident logs, and budget updates to the designated Head of Department (HOD) and Board.
- Interagency Coordination: Effectively liaise with government wildlife services, law enforcement agencies, NGOs, conservation partners, and local communities.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Diploma/Degree in Wildlife Management, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or Security/Law Enforcement.
- Specialized training in anti-poaching tactics, K9 integration, tactical patrols, tracking, wildlife crime investigation, first aid/wilderness medical care, firearms competency, advanced bushcraft, and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC).
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in anti-poaching operations in challenging environments, with a proven record of successful leadership.
- Exceptional physical fitness, mental resilience, strong tactical judgment, and proven ability to mentor diverse teams.
- Proficiency in patrol/tracking systems (EarthRanger, SMART, CyberTracker), GIS tools, VHF/UHF radios, satellite communications, drones, and MS Office Suite.
